Where can I find my property's assessed value and tax bill online?

Short Answer

Your county government is the official source. In Northwest Indiana, the Lake, Porter, and LaPorte County assessor, auditor, and treasurer offices publish property records online, including assessed value, tax bill history, and payment status. Search for your county's official website to look up your property.

Looking up your property records online

Every property record starts with the county, and in Northwest Indiana the counties publish most of it online. The trick is knowing which county office holds which piece of the puzzle, because assessed value, tax rates, and payments live in different places.

County assessor: assessed value

The county assessor's office maintains the assessed value of every property, and its website typically offers an online property search by address or parcel number. Here you can see the assessed value, confirmation of your homestead deduction, and the details behind your annual assessment notice. If the assessed value looks wrong to you, this is also the office that starts the appeal process, which I cover in my answer on appealing your property tax assessment.

County auditor: deductions and tax rates

The county auditor's office handles the deduction side of the ledger. Its online records show the deductions applied to your property, the local tax rate, and how your taxable value was derived. Understanding the difference between assessed and taxable value helps you read these records correctly, and I explain both in my answer on assessed value versus taxable value.

County treasurer: bills and payments

When it is time to pay, the county treasurer is the office that bills and collects. The treasurer's website shows your current tax bill, the installment amounts and due dates, and your payment history. This is where you go to confirm the details I describe in my answer on when property tax bills are due.

Start with the county's official website

For any property in Northwest Indiana, begin with the official website of the county where the home sits: Lake, Porter, or LaPorte County. Search for the assessor, auditor, or treasurer department and look for their online property search or tax lookup tool. Some counties put everything under one portal, while others split it across offices, so start with the department that matches the number you need.

A few practical notes

  • You can search by street address, but having the parcel number (sometimes called the parcel ID) from an old tax bill or your closing paperwork usually returns the most accurate record.
  • Real estate websites and appraisal tools show estimated values, but only the county's records are official for tax purposes.
  • If you are buying, do not rely on the seller's online tax estimate either. Ask for the actual bill and current assessment, and I will help you read both. That is part of the service I describe on how much your home is worth in Northwest Indiana.

This is general information rather than tax advice. County websites and record layouts change over time, so confirm your county's current online tools through the official county assessor, auditor, or treasurer offices in Lake, Porter, or LaPorte County.

Liz's Advice

Looking up a tax record is a five-minute task once you know where to click, but most people never try because they assume the county makes it hard. It does not, and I am happy to point any client to the exact page for their county.

When we tour a home you are serious about, I pull the actual county record, not an online estimate. The difference between the two has saved more than one buyer from a budget surprise.
